Taste of Squam is HAPPENING!

One of our most popular offerings is when we open up the weekend for a Taste of Squam which makes sense when you think of how busy we all are– it’s not easy to get away for a long stretch of days, but an overnight? Let’s do it!

Grab your overnight bag — throw in a pair of sneakers, a toothbrush, maybe some knitting and get on up here! Yes. If your heart has been calling for a special little getaway — one that is filled with the smell of pine needles, long sweet hours to walk through the woods, hang on the dock, go for a swim or sink into that book or project you have been wanting to focus on without any interruption — time for you, time to unwind– well, here it is.

Of course, if what you want most is to join into some of the creative play that we have going on– that’s available, too. Below are the Squam Extras happening on Saturday that you are welcome to join into.

NATURAL MAKING with Amy Ambroult
Saturday morning 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

In this mini session, we will be collaborating with nature and using what we find in the wild to make art. We will start by learning some techniques like pinning leaves together with pine needles, weaving vines, and combining materials in other creative ways. This is PLAY on the highest order: we will forage through the woods and along the lake, collecting interesting materials and objects of interest to use in our creations. Our time spent in the woods will equally emphasizes a deep love and respect for nature, while pushing each individual’s creative expression. If you have a Swiss Army knife, be sure to bring it along!

GENTLE MOVEMENT YOGA with Michelle Vitale
Saturday morning 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Come bask in a series of practices that will leave you feeling reinvigorated with new possibilities for kindness in your everyday. The class will weave breathing exercises, gentle yoga flow balanced with calming restorative postures, mindful self-compassion practices and reflective journaling. It will be an emotionally connected experience where you’ll release tension, reduce stress and spark creativity. You will have the opportunity to author your very own self-compassion phrase – to keep with you as daily inspiration to treat yourself with kindness. Bring a journal, pen, and an open heart. All are welcome.

CROCHET MENDING with Cal Patch
Saturday morning 10:30 pm – 12:00 pm

Another hole in your favorite sock? Traditional darning is one way to mend it, but guess what– you can also darn with crochet as a crochet darn is sturdy, flexible, and can be shaped to fit a heel or toe. In the spirit of “visible mending”, it’s fun to use bright, wild colors to show off your crochet darn, so save those leftover bits of stripy sock yarn for your mending basket. You might have so much fun, you’ll actually be happy to see a new hole in your most-loved and worn garments! Note: A knowledge of single crochet stitch is needed for this class.

  • Please bring: A sock, sweater or other knit item with a hole
  • Small amount of comparable-sized yarn to what the original is knit from (probably between fingering and worsted), can be matching or contrast
  • Compatible crochet hooks, in the range of B-D (2-3mm) for fingering yarn, up to F-G (3-4mm) for worsted
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

STITCHING PLAY! with Sam Lamb + Karen Stevens
Saturday afternoon 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

What could be sweeter than to join a circle of people who love needle, thread and the chance to stitch? Sam and Karen will have some fun prompts on hand for you, but you can also bring your own project to work on. If you have never explored the fun of visible mending and artful stitching, you could not ask for two more inspiring guides!

HARRISVILLE WEAVING INTRO with Rachel Snack
Saturday afternoon 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Have you been wanting to put your hands onto a loom? Well, come on then and learn the basics of tapestry weaving on a Harrisville Designs upright tapestry loom. Several looms will be warped for Squam attendees to weave on, and together students will make a collaborative woven project. This Extra will be relaxed and demonstrative – weave for as long as you like, or just stop by to say hi! All supplies will be provided.
