Experience level: advanced beginner

For Claudia Martinez, Japan plays a major role both in her shop—Snuggly Monkey— and her crafting life as she is an avid Sashiko stitcher.

Heirloom Boro blends Claudia’s passion for the beautiful Otomi folk stitching of Mexico with sashiko stitching + the art of boro.

Wow.

It’s possible that this combination has never been offered quite this way before.

When offering workshops, Claudia is always honored to share her experiences of living and studying in Japan as she was so warmly welcomed into the creative community. We, of course, are so thrilled to have Claudia bringing her magic to Squam for the first time and offering a workshop created especially for this gathering.

In this workshop, we will be working on a 12” x 12” piece of fabric to tell a family story. Using scraps of fabric that have sentimental meaning to us as well as other beautiful textiles, Claudia will lead the class through a process of telling a piece of family history through color, symbol and stitch.

The result will be a piece to pass down through the generations and, depending on your vision, perhaps you may continue to add to this first square and expand it into something larger—a wall hanging or quilt.

Wherever it leads, you can be sure this fusion of Sashiko + Otomi will open you to worlds of new possibilities.
