Teacher Feature :: Gudrun Johnston

Teacher Feature :: Gudrun Johnston

If Coco Chanel came back as a Scottish-born knitwear designer who made her home in the US, she would surely inhabit the body of Gudrun Johnston

Gudrun epitomizes the quiet confidence of a consummate professional -- someone who excels at their craft but doesn't spend any time filling the balloon of their ego with hot air.  On the contrary, Gudrun simply goes about her life sending the most gorgeous, hip, chic designs into the world without any fanfare at all.

Her design aesthetic accurately reflects what it is like to be around Gudrun as she is calm, smart, wry, utterly original and authentic.  Perhaps one of the reasons that she is such a wildly popular teacher: students know that there is never anything superfluous about Gudrun's design or classes.  She delivers beauty and simplicity in full measure and we are always thrilled when she brings her distinctive mojo to squam.

Below enjoy a glimpse into the life of this rather reclusive rock star.

Where were you born?

In a wee croft house in the Shetland Islands

What was your favorite dessert as a kid, and what is your favorite now?

I think I had many favourites but the first to spring to mind is Millionaires Shortbread.....and now.....probably a lovely summery pavlova.

What is the best way to spend a Sunday morning?

Waking up to an already clean house with no dirty dishes and someone else cooking breakfast.... then a nice family walk to air out the cobwebs!

Who is a hero in your life?

My mum, she was always there for all of her kids, worked hard, didn't complain, and always looked amazing.

What are three of your most favorite scents?

Coffee, rain and the smell of freshly baked bread.

What song or Cd is currently getting alot of play time at your house?

Ed Sheeran, an up and coming British singer who is a fellow redhead!

What is something you are really good at?

Making decisions....and then changing my mind!

----

Thank you, Gudrun.  Although both of her Spring classes are full, there is still space in both Shetland Lace Explored and Simultaneous Set-in Sleeves that she will be offering in Italy in October (as of this writing 1.25.12, anyway).

This was such a nice glimpse of how neat Gudrun is. Gudrun's Simultaneous Set-in Sleeves class is a revelation -- I loved her practical, hands-on teaching style and she's just a calm, lovely person. I can't wait to take Seamless Design in the spring.
