Sometimes the biggest challenge in starting a project or learning new skills is finding the place to begin. What do I need? How do I set up my space? Where do I go from here? It can feel overwhelming and confusing.

Lucky for us all, Sarah Ahearn Bellemare has a clear and simple approach that makes everything easy and fun!

Over the course of four weeks, Sarah will guide you through a series of exercises that will jump start your creativity! You will receive inspiration, support and motivation that will help you make a series of paintings, as well as develop a fresh relationship with the incredible power of sketchbooks.

The best part is that Sarah shares her tried and true methods with you so that you can ramp up quickly using her best practices.

You will delight in the fun of bringing elements together in beautiful and unusual ways when she walks you through each step, de-mystifying a process that might have caused blocks in the past, such as which paints do I use? Which brushes? What order? What about color? What about composition? With Sarah by your side—you will gain the confidence and skills to make art that fills your heart.

As she says, “I’ll discuss and show you how to use the materials that we’ll be working with, so not to worry if you haven’t painted or worked with the materials prior to class. Please plan to make mistakes alongside your successes and have fun- both are fundamental to the creative process!”

One of the key tools that Sarah will help to demystify is the sketchbook. In fact, once you have registered, you will receive a delightful course packet in your mailbox prior to the start of the workshop. The packet will include: vintage papers & ephemera for collage from Sarah’s own collections, playful prompts, handwritten how-tos (or directions ) and MORE! This will be a starting point for play and exploration in our sketchbooks that will lead us right into the heart of the course:  pages & paint!

Sarah has a number of games and prompts that will help make the transition from sketchbook to painting organic and easy. She will be sharing lessons on color, composition and image transfers.

And, she will be available for a full week after the four weeks of lessons to help answer questions and integrate all that you have learned.

Sarah's techniques will help you find new ways to align the rhythms of your everyday life with the time for creativity. It doesn’t matter if you have two days or two hours in your week, you can still find some creative time for yourself; Sarah has a tried and true approach on just how to do this.

In one short month, you will gain the skills and experience to generate a creative, artful response to your daily life and the world around you. Whether you are a straight-up beginner or someone who could use the support, encouragement, inspiration and motivation of a creative gathering—this course is for you.

How it works...

Sarah will be posting every weekday morning over the four weeks of the workshop. Each day will be different but twice a week she'll be sharing a video, other days will be photo-based and she'll be writing every day as well. Some days will be inspirational, some she'll be teaching you a technique, some she will be sharing a helpful lesson in something like color theory.

The workshop will be available online until 30 August.

She'll also have private Flickr and Facebook groups created so you can share your artwork and support each other!

The beauty of all of this is that it means the workshop is available to anyone, anywhere, anytime...whether you be in Madrid, Malaysia or Miami.

We will send you login information to our private Online Workshop space prior to the start of the workshop and you will be able to access it whenever it feels best for your schedule.

About Sarah...

Sarah Ahearn Bellemare is an artist from New England who first began painting as a way to illustrate poetry.

Her mixed media paintings are layered with found images, fragments of text from old books, and pieces of vintage maps. These ephemera become the fabric and focus of many of her paintings, many of which are inspired by her childhood memories of time spent by the seashore.

Sarah has taught art to many students in a variety of settings ranging from art camps to museums, teaching students age 3 to 63. She has loved every minute of her time teaching at previous Squams, and is thrilled to be returning once again. The inspiration for Sarah's book, Painted PagesFueling Creativity with Mixed Media and Sketchbooks, (Quarry Books, May 2011) traces in part to her time at teaching at Squam, and is filled with the beautiful photography of fellow Squamette Thea Coughlin. Sarah regularly exhibits her paintings throughout the Northeast in galleries and at art fairs. She can often be found making messes in her sunny studio in Northampton, MA. When she’s not creating, she’s dreaming up new adventures that she’ll take with her ecologist husband and their precocious (yet adorable) little girl.
