meet me at the dock: the things we gather
It seemed everyone was collecting something: baseball cards, Barbie Dolls, beer cans, snow globes...So in 1975, I proclaimed to everyone that I wanted to start a jewelry box collection. What I didn't realize is that I must have mistakingly said, music box collection, because I received ten of those that first Christmas...and I contunued to receive them on every holiday and birthday for many years to follow.
The thing is, I didn't like music boxes. The sound of them freaked me out. The music reminded me of horror movies ~ like the one with some creepy clown guy who drove an ice-cream truck playing "Pop Goes the Weasel" as he was looking for children to poison. So there I was, a collector of something I didn't want, but was too polite to ever say anything!
(I'm actually happy now that I have these music boxes, and am no longer traumatized by their melodies.)
I do not consciously collect anything these days, but I do seem to have specific things I seem to surround myself with. The most obvious being old books, and natural objects.

More than the actual content of the book, I am fascinated with the stories surrounding each book. I love the beautiful handwritten dedications, the bookplates, and finding the underlined parts. I have discovered pressed flowers, letters inteneded to be kept secret, and dear old photographs...I can get lost in imagining the history of each one, whose hands once turned those pages, where did that person live, what occasion did the flower come from...I suppose its a metaphor for me in that I always want to know "the story behind the story" in my day to day life.

Like many of you, I also surround myself with little bits of nature. These llittle souvenirs are reminders of hikes I have been on, trips I have taken, or specific moments of beauty. I feel like when I look at these little treasures I am brought to a better headspace. The presence of these gifts provide me with a bit of relief, especially when I have been at the computer for an extended time...
Do you have any collections? Do you have certain things that you surround yourself with? Do tell, and take a photograph if you can. I would love to know!
*If you have a photo to share we have started a hashtag on Instagram: #thingswegather You can also post your images at our Squam Flickr Group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/squamdock/
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend..I'm planning on collecting a lot of shamrocks! xo *jen*
P.S.
Be sure to check out the first in a series of online workhops we are now offering through Squam, beginning with the sweetest ever, Alena Hennessy. If you are looking for a little taste of Squam and something different than your every day e-course, this is for you!
In the Squam Store this month, we will be offering three differnt poetry prints created by Alena. They are all so pretty and the quotes couldn't be more perfect. (I have one hanging in my office and I just LOVE the way it looks in this antique frame!)

I like to surround myself with little collections. One of the things I collect are rocks from special places I've traveled. They inspire me, as well as take me back to the time and place they are from. I posted a picture on IG. I have one special rock that formed naturally into a heart shape. It one of my favorite.

oh and....books, magazines, pens, journals, scarves..oh my. ;-)
I ended up with lots of elephants for the same reason...I mentioned I liked them at one point. But I don't have much patience for things that require dusting but have no other purpose--I tend to like beautiful and also useful things. So only a few are out.
Hmm. We have lots of bits of nature floating around. My kids and I can't go to a beach without weighing ourselves down with stones and shells. When I buy, I tend to collect art supplies and fabric and other raw materials, plus books. On display we have photos of our family along with art work we (the kids and I) have created. Painted rocks and painted wooden eggs and pottery and our own paintings and photographs carefully matted and framed...this is what surrounds us!
Jen - Thank you!! Was glad to share. :)
Things we gather? Oh my I should no doubt ask my husband to write this bit as I do believe my clutter is a source of bother to him. He once stated he did not know what I would do without door nobs to hang stuff from.
I have a vast collection of fabric, nearly a store's worth. I do sell fabric on line mind you but I have my own shelves of 'the stash' as well. It is an addiction and I readily admit it. Vintage sewing trims, ribbons, buttons and patterns are also stashed about in boxes and tins here and there. Did I mention sewing my vast collection of sewing and crafting book and well let's move over a shelf to the cook book area.
I love gathering sea glass better known as broken bits of wine and beer bottles. But, every now and again I am able to find a shard from a tea cup under the wharves in Friendship, Maine where we have a cottage and I am in total delight. Bottle necks are hung on a piece of twine and displayed on the back entry to said cottage. I love chairs, old chairs, chairs that need repair, chairs with character. They sit waiting for eventual renewal. Vintage Christmas ornaments call to me and my Christmas storage section in the basement grows every couple of years with my new vintage additions. Flocked deer, felt snowmen and carolers, mercury glass balls, glitter dusted cardboard houses with slight need of repair are now treasured again. I do love a nice arrangement of summer hydrangeas and it is a game at trying to get them to dry in some shade of blue or accept reality and watch the softly displayed mounds age a golden beige over the winter. Either way, I love hydrangeas.
will post some photos when I can find them. I am not well versed at saving photos to computer where I can find them again.
