how blessings multiply

When I was a kid and the car would break down (my parents had five kids and one old car), my mom would always say something like, "wasn't it so lucky we weren't on the highway?"  or "weren't we lucky the gas station was just down the road?"  or "thank heavens nobody was behind us!"

(If it seems like our car was always breaking down-- well, it seemed that way to me, too.  The gas gauge didn't work so we also often ran out of gas because we didn't know the tank was empty).

However, as I think back on it now-- what strikes me most was how my mom responded.  She didn't send all her energy to everything that was wrong, she immediately got us all to focus on how lucky we were with what had gone right.  This is one of the many ways in which my life has been blessed:  attitude.  (thanks, mom!)

And, above*-- you can see me chatting about the most magical gift I was given last Spring that I absolutely adored:  a simple gratitude journal.  I have used it everyday-- and, quite selfishly, wanted another-- but asked Amy G to use some of her gorgeous photos from her time at squam to make them available to all of you.

They are now available in the squam store, but only until January 31, 2012.

I do hope you like them.  And, that they help you to expand all the blessings in your life.

Bisous, e

LOVE these!! In difficult times in the past I've made a habit to write down something to be happy for every day, and it *did* become a habit to notice these things, so that I no longer need to write them down. But these are so pretty that I want to start again! I'll be back after school pick-up to order myself a gift, and perhaps one for a friend, too.

First-go Christine for an awesome video. Yaroo!
Second-hi beautiful E. I love seeing videos of you and with the sun shining in the windows-oh it totally brought lightness to this gray and overcast day here in upstate NY.
Third- Gorgeous journals! What a special and delightful gift that was to send you and now that we all get to have one- what a treasure.
Kicking my procrastinating butt, because I freakin missed out on the cupsdamn it! Indescision kept me saying I would make up my mind the next time I visited the store. Well it won't happen again...not this time... over I go to choose a gratitude journal :)

elizabeth, what a gift your mom gave you...teaching you to direct your focus on the positive, on the good...and now you pass that on...

and i am totally buying one (or more) of these. like thea, procrastination and indecision led me to miss out on the squam cups. i remembered at one point on 1.12 that time was running out, but still never made the necessary clicks. not this time...

i have stalled for years (and i mean years) on journalling and sketching. getting caught up on silly notions like...well, i won't bore you all with lengthy stories of my neuroses. but i love these gratitude journals and will jump on this.

What beautiful journals - and the video is great. I have to admit I'm sort of a failed gratitude journaler (journalist?). I have the best intentions and then somewhere along the line forget to do my nightly entries.

Something I've been doing lately, though, is kind of a variation on your mother's wonderful way of looking at things - when I find myself in a frustrating/negative/upsetting situation, I tell myself, Quick! Think of 5 things you're grateful for right now. It definitely helps. :)
