homemade holiday

I am doing my best to steer clear of the mall this year, focusing on artisan made gifts, and homemade treats. Yesterday, in a fit of good cheer, I decided to whip up a batch of my favorite, gluten-free granola (compliments of gluten free girl). Packaged in a mason jar, with pretty ribbon and ornament accents, a simple batch of granola becomes a thoughtful gift that anyone would love to receive.

This season, I'm not limiting my baking to granola; my mom and I love being in the kitchen together, and we have serious plans to make nutballs, sugar cookies (with plenty of sprinkles), cranberry upside down cake, and ice cream pies. I think that might be just enough sugar to get us through the holiday season!

So beautiful and so simple!! LOVE! One of my most favorite memories of cooking during the holidays, was making taffy with my Grams. The best part being when she would slather our hands with butter so we could pull that warm gooey taffy until it was ready to be placed on the wax paper.
It has been years since I have done that, guess it's about time I return to this tradition!

JEN - taffy, really? that's awesome...

we have grammie leona's apple pie every holiday. the recipe is easily over 100-years-old, passed down through the iowa side of the family. there's a little mystery in it, as the recipe is so simple, and yet can work perfectly or not depending on what seemed like the whims of the baking fairies. a few years ago, my sister-in-law and i tried an apple pie experiment a la cooks illustrated and made it a number of different ways, using metal, tinfoil and glass pie pans to try and see if any of that made a difference. turns out -- it's all in the apples! you need an intuitive sense of the apples and their water content to get it to come out just right. and with all that practice, we have a much better track record now :). can't wait til this weekend to try again! xo

Hi!
I am making Jen Lee's Magic Chocolate Chip cookie recipe that she gave us 2 years ago at Squam. I have made them several times now and they are always a big hit.
I feel like there is so much love in them..

oh you guys know me, it's all about the rice krispie treats-- although to be totally honest, I am in the middle of green smoothie land-- so there won't be any RKT in my immediate future-- but I were making a something-something-- that would be it. xo, e
