squam by the sea & OBX love

It is so good to be home...

So good I can't even tell you.

So good to be back to some of the rhythms of my life...though after being gone a month and having had Summer descend in both weather and temperment on the Outer Banks, it is taking a little adjusting (not to mention the jet-lag and recovering from a 65-hour return trip...don't even ask).

But home I am...and tomorrow I intend to take my first morning ritual walk in the dune since my return to see what I can see. Maybe some of these beauties?

If you are not familiar with the Outer Banks or OBX as we all lovingly refer to it, it is a string of barrier islands that hug the North Carolina coastline...

And it is not only my home, but it is also the home of our Squam by the Sea retreat...

This month is really special for me and my family and our islands as the current issue of National Geographic Magazine features our little sandbar in a visual love letter written and photogaphed by my beloved, crazy, photographer, neighbor, father-in-love David Alan Harvey, it is his 42nd story for NG and much of it was shot within a bike ride of our homes. For real. This friday we are having an outdoor slide-show party to celebrate...if you are around these parts, please come over! The essay is available online as well - be sure to check out the Photo Gallery.

And if you can't make it this Friday...then come to Squam by the Sea! There are just two spots left, and I just might be able to secure us a private screening of his photos if you're interested. :)

For those that are on the fence about going you should take the chance and go. It is such a peaceful and magical place. You won't regret it.

My heart and mind are filled with so many wonderful memories. xo

I wish I were there now, but I'll just have to wait with anticipation for October! And a private screening would be over the top!

The photos and essay about the outer banks by David Alan Harvey are wonderful testaments to their fragile beauty. The picture of the house, its remains, and its owners so poignantly captured the now-you-see-it-now-you-don't nature of this landscape. Thanks for sharing this, Michelle. Welcome back. Wish I could come to Squam, but I will be coming home from a month in Greece on October 17.
