The first time I ventured off to Squam Art Workshops in the woods of New Hampshire, I was so very nervous. I knew only a handful of people who would be attending, and I requested a single room in a shared cabin. With a six hour drive looming ahead, I made two very important compromises with myself. One was to stop thinking about what would happen when I got there and the second was that if I arrived and it was a complete bust, I could simply get back into my car and drive home. I began my travels on the open road with zero expectations.
Imagine my surprise when I pulled up and was welcomed with smiles, hugs, and inquiries about my drive up. Questions like "are you feeling ok" or "can I get you anything" came from each of the Squam fairies in the welcome house. "Let me introduce you to your cabin mates" came next.
There was no hustle or confusion. I felt very warmly received and taken care of - and that was just in the initial moments of my arrival.
I came away from that weekend feeling replenished, heard, loved, and nourished. A super bonus to attending a Squam weekend is the connections you make. The friends I made that first weekend are solid, lifelong relationships that I cherish.
Deciding to go to Squam was a leap of faith. Am I ever glad that I did - and plan to do so again.
